Play is our favorite way of learning

Elina Ingelande & Linda Sinka
LEARN IT
Back in 2013, Linda – a young business school student – arrived from volunteering as a teacher in Peru. Linda was passionate about teaching as never before! In the meantime, Elina was about to graduate from Law school but had doubts about whether a law office was really the right place for her. This is when they met in a youth leadership program. While working closely on alcohol prevention policy for Latvia’s youth, not only friendship emerged between them but they both found a common enthusiasm for education. As a result, Linda and Elina founded Learn IT.

Project

Learn IT is an after-school coding club for students in the first to ninth grade. During classes children learn the basics of coding to express themselves in a modern way. May it be building a mobile app, creating a homepage or programming a new version of Pac-Man – the students master not only coding, but practice logic, problem solving and creativity. These are skills that will help them in any field, whether they decide to become musicians, doctors or architects. And what is most important, they have fun while doing it!

Impact story

Elizabete is a curious 13-year-old student from Riga who adores nature and dreams of becoming a journalist for National Geographic. To express her admiration to wildlife she has programmed a mobile app where user can play and combine sounds of various animals creating a symphony of a jungle or sounds of a farm. Besides that, she has programmed an online book which anyone can use to learn facts about Guinea pigs. Nevertheless, her most meaningful project is her homepage where Elizabete has combined all her projects together and written short paragraphs about them. She believes that this prototype of online blog will bring her closer to her dream of becoming a journalist.
